Inspiration

Since the Supreme Court passed a bill that overturned Roe V Wade, there were bills immediately passed then to ban reproductive care - abortion - in 11 US states, preventing females of any age to not have the right to control their own bodies. Since then, a lot of females would have to travel across the country to get the reproductive right they need which is really difficult for those with financial problems. I have come across cases of females including assault victims forced into 9 months of pregnancy, not because they were forced into giving birth, but because they didn't have the money to travel to another state to get the reproductive treatment needed. Finance is a huge concern, so I got inspired to design a non-profit website that helps women get the reproductive care they deserve. This hackathon focuses on medical/treatment, and this project helps reach out to women getting the reproductive treatment they deserve.

What it does

This is a website designed to connect females of any age with financial concerns to connect to non-profit organizations that can provide funding for travel, food, hotel, carpooling, medical treatment, and other costs. This will also connect to sponsors who are volunteering to help females, for instance connecting to a person who can provide free carpooling from the house to the doctor's clinic. Another example could be, connecting to organizations that can provide funding for flight costs, or provide meal kits during the travel. The website can also help schedule the cheapest possible route from let's say Alabama to North Carolina, and connect to volunteers that provide the services as above.

How we built it

I built it using Python for the backend and HTML, CSS, and React.js frontend design using Flask. I utilized hooks and various React components.

Challenges we ran into

The challenge I ran into was producing the organizational list in a neat row using a loop in React. I was able to accomplish that after many trials and errors and help through Stack Overflow. I must say, it was a very valuable lesson and my learning spiked a lot.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I'm proud that I was able to combine my computer science skills in a humanitarian setting, that solves real-world issues such as women's right to reproductive care. My goal as a software engineer is to work on tools that help people in need, and I'm glad this was my first step in designing an innovative plan for medical treatment access. I'm also proud of having a huge spike in my React skills and playing around with website design creativity.

What we learned

I learned how to fully design a website and polish it easily using React. I also learned about the Joy and Beauty of computing, and that we can build products to with humanitarian issues.

What's next for Funds for reproductive care

My next task is to have a working database using MongoDB or PostgreSQL, and bring this idea to my university and abortion rights clubs.
