Inspiration
From a young age I have been fascinated by space so I knew that I wanted to make a lens in this area. I also realised that I was interested in making an educational lens so a space themed quiz was a perfect blend.
What it does
This lens allows users to learn about planets in a fun quiz format. Users can choose to play solo or against a friend. This adds a competitive aspect to the lens. The user places the 8 planets of our solar system in their play space and is then asked questions about the planets. The user has to use 3D hand tracking to touch the planet which they believe is the correct answer. They will then be told if they were correct, incorrect or too slow and will be given an informative fact supporting the question.
How I built it
Using lens studio I made use of many technologies mainly connected lenses and 3D hand tracking. This allowed me to created a multiplayer experience and allows the user to use their physical hands to interact with the lens. I also created planet textures and materials to create realistic looking planets. I also carried online research to create my questions. I carried out a lot of testing to ensure that the lens was running smoothly. I created pixel art for my menus and other screens to add some fun and colour to what the user sees.
Challenges I ran into
Connected lenses proved to be a difficult technology to implement as I had to get used to the messaging system. I eventually overcame this after I took some time to learn about the system in detail and successfully made my code run smoothly with the messaging system. Another challenge which I ran into was making sure that the instructions were easy for the user to understand. This lead me to asking for feedback from friends and family on how easy the instructions were to understand and making changes based on their feedback.
Accomplishments that I am proud of
I am very proud of how much I managed to push myself whilst creating this lens. I was proud of how I managed to get the connected lens aspect implemented to a high quality.
What I learned
As much as I learnt a lot about coding a connected lens I also learn a lot about educational based lenses and the future uses for AR in education.
What's next for Solar Quiz
In developing this lens further I would add a feature in which the user could learn about the formation of the planets along side key data such as size, age, length of day etc. I would also expand it to add more detail on general space rather than focusing purely on planets.
