Inspiration

As a Substack creator myself, I grew frustrated with the limited native analytics—no deep dive into what truly drives open rates, retention, or paid conversions. I wanted a tool that turns raw data into clear, actionable steps, not just numbers on a page. The vision was simple: empower fellow creators to scale their newsletters without drowning in spreadsheets.

What it does

Substack Growth Kit is an all-in-one analytics and growth tool for Substack writers. It delivers real-time audience growth snapshots, engagement breakdowns by topic/time, AI-powered growth recommendations, cross-platform tracking, and monetization insights to boost free-to-paid conversions and reduce churn.

How we built it

I started with wireframing core pages (Dashboard, Analytics, Growth Tips) in Figma, prioritizing intuitive card-based layouts and animated visualizations. Using React/Next.js for the frontend, I integrated Chart.js for dynamic charts and TailwindCSS for the brand’s gradient-heavy design system. I built out each page’s functionality incrementally—first core metrics, then animations, then interactive filters.

Challenges we ran into

The biggest hurdle was balancing rich animations with performance; overly complex transitions caused lag on mobile. I also struggled to design a heatmap for send-time performance that was both visually striking and easy to interpret. Iterating on the AI recommendation logic to keep suggestions concise but actionable was another tightrope walk.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We created a seamless, responsive experience that feels premium but intuitive—no technical expertise required. The animated metric cards and transition effects elevate the UI without sacrificing speed, and early tester feedback confirms the growth recommendations feel personalized and valuable.

What we learned

I learned to prioritize performance over "flashy" animations, and that creators value clarity over complexity—data needs to tell a story, not just exist. I also gained a deeper understanding of Substack’s audience behavior patterns and how to translate that into actionable insights.

What's next for this project

Next, we’ll add advanced segmentation for audience data (e.g., by geographic region or engagement level), integrate A/B testing for newsletter send times/topics, and build out a mobile app for on-the-go analytics. We also plan to expand cross-platform tracking to include emerging social platforms like Threads and Bluesky.
