Inspiration
Fuel scarcity and sudden fuel price increases are frequent experiences in Nigeria. Long queues, panic buying, and unexpected disruptions to daily plans showed us that people often react too late because they lack early and reliable information. FuelEase was inspired by the need to help people prepare ahead of time rather than struggle during fuel crises.
What it does
FuelEase helps users anticipate fuel scarcity and price fluctuations by analyzing verified data from trusted sources. The platform provides early alerts and insights that allow users to plan transportation, budgets, and daily activities more effectively before shortages or price hikes occur.
How we built it
FuelEase will be designed as a lightweight mobile and web application. We will structure a data collection process that gathers fuel related information from verified news outlets, official channels, and public sources. The data is cleaned and analyzed to identify trends, then a basic predictive model such as time series or regression is applied to generate early forecasts. The interface is simple and focused on delivering clear alerts and insights.
Challenges we ran into
One major challenge was filtering unreliable or misleading information, especially during fuel crises when rumors spread quickly. We addressed this by focusing on source verification and data screening. Another challenge was building meaningful predictions with limited publicly available data. Ensuring the app remained lightweight and accessible on common smartphones was also a key consideration.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of defining a realistic problem rooted in real world experiences and designing a solution that prioritizes preparation and trust. Building a clear MVP plan focused on a local city allowed us to ground the idea in practical use rather than theory.
What we learned
We learned how fuel instability affects multiple sectors beyond transportation, including food prices and productivity. Technically, we gained experience in data analysis, basic forecasting, and ethical handling of sensitive information. We also learned the importance of designing for accessibility and clarity.
What's next for FuelEase
Next, we plan to improve prediction accuracy by expanding data sources and refining our models. We aim to introduce location based alerts, user feedback integration, and broader city coverage beyond the MVP location. Long term, FuelEase can scale to support regional and national fuel preparedness.
