Inspiration
I got the idea for this tool on one of my long trip on French highways. I wondered how much fuel I could save by going slower, but also I was very impatient to get where I was going. I asked once arived to several IA tools (Gemini, Perplexity, ChatGPT, etc) the question: how much whould I have saved, had I travelled 110 km/h instead of 130? (max speed on French highways). Then I asked them for several other values. Then, I wanted to plot graphs. Next think I know, I am building this tool.
What it does
It is a handy way to approximately get the results I was looking for.
It can:
- Compare fuel consumption at different speeds
- Calculate time difference and delay costs
- Real-time cost savings in euros
- Percentage-based fuel reduction analysis
- Quick preset scenarios for common trips
Also, for better understanding:
- Fuel consumption curves across speed ranges
- Travel time analysis for fixed distances
- Cost analysis with monetary impact visualization
- Dual-axis charts showing multiple metrics
- Cumulative savings projections over time
- Interactive charts with hover details
How we built it
Bolt, 100% for the dev, and Perplexity for research.
Challenges we ran into
None, it went quite smoothly I must say.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
The site works, and does what it was made for. Fantastic!
What we learned
Nice formulas for fuel optimisation, although they are very basic and should be adapted to any kind of vehicle in the future.
What's next for Fuel Efficiency Calculator
What would be really good:
- Adaptative formulas for differend kind of vehicle, car brand and model for instance
- From a real world itinerary, calculate the trade off of reducing one's speed on one or several segments of the trip (ex: 110 km/h instead of 130 on the highway, 80 km/h instead of 90 on the country roads, etc)
