Inspiration

The inspiration behind FRONT-AI stemmed from the complex challenges faced in healthcare data management, particularly in complying with HIPAA regulations. Recognizing that many healthcare organizations, especially smaller ones, struggle with managing sensitive patient data while adhering to stringent privacy laws, we envisioned a solution that simplifies this process. The idea was to create a tool that not only ensures compliance but also is accessible and easy to use for a wide range of healthcare providers.

What We Learned

Throughout this project, we learned about the technical and ethical considerations involved in handling sensitive health information. The project also enhanced our understanding of hardware and software integration, particularly in creating a secure, offline-capable device that can handle sensitive data.

How We Built It

FRONT-AI was built using a combination of hardware and software components. We developed a specialized hardware device capable of operating fully offline for maximum security. The software aspect involved creating a custom-trained Large Language Model (FRONT-LLM), designed specifically to process healthcare data in accordance with HIPAA guidelines. The integration of this model with our hardware ensured that any non-compliant document could be anonymized effectively. The use of Server Message Block (SMB) and File Transfer Protocol (FTP) servers facilitated secure data transfer.

Challenges Faced

One of the main challenges was ensuring the system was robust and compliant with all HIPAA rules. Another significant hurdle was balancing the hardware capabilities with the software requirements, especially to function effectively offline. We also faced challenges in making the device user-friendly while maintaining its high-security standards.
