Inspiration
As people with underrepresented identities, we were inspired by the idea of finding friends that understood and empathized with our struggles. We want friends who are not tolerant of, but happily celebrate our differences.
What it Does
This app is meant to connect marginalized groups, specifically those in the LGBTQ+ community, in a way that feels safe and welcoming. Everyone deserves to have friends that make them feel loved for every part of who they are.
How We Built it
We built it by starting off with an ERD, and Wireframe, then began to code. We had a plan to build small aspects of the front end with JavaScript, HTML, and CSS, and connect them to the backend using MongoDB and Mongoose.
Challenges We Ran Into
We had some issues making requests to the database that took HOURS to solve. This was our first hackathon AND our first all-nighter pulled for the sake of coding.
Accomplishments That We're Proud Of
We didn't give up, despite the difficulty and how discouraged we started to feel as the deadline came closer. We kept telling ourselves it was better to turn in something little than nothing at all, and motivated each other through the process. We ended up fixing our code with a few hours left on the clock and were able to continue.
What We Learned
- We don't know everything even if we feel like we should, and that's okay
- Google is our friend.
- Our gut is also our friend, and we should trust it more (ehem, Iris).
- Something is better than nothing.
- This is about the experience, and though it was tough, we're happy we had it. ## What's Next for Friendly Who's to say? The idea for friendly was born out of passion, and it would be amazing to really flesh it out and see it in action serving the purpose intended for it.
