FRIENDLY BUS STATION FOR AGGIES
I always wondered why in this city I never saw people with disability in buses. However, all the buses are designed for disable individuals. There are distanced areas inside the bus for disable people priority. There were two answers for my doubt: one was that TAMU does not accept students with disability. Second was that despite bus friendly design in for disabled people, the access to these facilities has difficulty for disabled individuals. Second hypothesis, absolutely, was my answer and consequently, I chose my project related to this problem in campus landscape design. I chose my project’s title as “Friendly Bus Station” which illustrates my approach about this design. It’s a simple issue and has a simple solution, as well. Nevertheless, this problem in campus makes big problem for disabled people to use public transportation. There is a high discrepancy about 30 centimeter between pedestrian elevation and bus floor elevation .If we redesign campus landscape based on ADA outdoor requirement , all students have this opportunity to use buses and other facilities and it, definitely, decrease air pollution, sound pollution, car traffic and etc.
There are some usual alternative solutions for this problem such as renovating bus stations by designing permanent ramps in campus or use temporary portable ramps for each bus or some temporary ladders. In this project, I worked on the first solution. The most important challenge for this project is to find a design pattern for all campus bus stations which firstly ease disabled people’s access to buses and secondly, it should be practical in all bus stations. Therefore, a minimal design is perfect because it is useful in different situations and decrease cost of renovation. To summarize, I designed a bus station with minimum elements, persistent material (metal) and easy to move (portable). This design has low maintenance, flexible in different situations and time periods and constant which decrease cost of maintence.
