Inspiration
Inspired by a local non-profit group called Creators' Joy, which helps connect senior citizens with youth, we thought of using technology and social media, which combined would solve the “loneliness pandemic” plaguing our senior homes. Due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, the senior population has gotten significantly more isolated due to restrictions on visitation. It is much harder than before for seniors to talk amongst each other. Seniors are usually not thought about when thinking about marginalized groups so we wanted to highlight the issues that seniors face.
What it does
Frienderly is an app that allows Seniors across the world to connect with one another and make friends without compromising their health by leaving their homes.
How we built it
Originally we were planning on creating our app on Android Studio but after 24 hours of working on it we realized we had made close to no improvements. In order to finish our project we decided to move further onto Figma using the prototyping tools. This way we are able to finish our whole idea and present something finished to the judges.
Challenges we ran into
When we had originally decided to use android studio, none of us had experience with the IDE. Especially being relatively new coders we quickly realized that it was going to be more than just a challenge to complete it in 24 hours.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of learning how to use Figma to prototype projects because it will be a very useful tool in the future.
What we learned
We learned that Hackathons are more about learning, rather than winning. Winning is just an extra bonus that may or may not come with all your hard work. Nevertheless, hackathons are more about the learning and experience that we gain. We also learned how to use some basic features on Android Studio.
What's next for Frienderly
We hope to work on Frienderly to actually make it a fully running application for Android devices.
