Friend: an AI-based, privacy-friendly chatbot for mental health

Inspiration

The inspiration for this project occurred to me while reading the book "Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson" in my English class. While reading the book, I realized for the first time that people my age can struggle so much with mental health just because they don't have someone to talk to. Also, it highlighted how tedious it is to find a trustworthy friend. It really inspired me to come up with the idea of a privacy-protected virtual friend who can be there to help anyone in need of support.

What it does?

"Friend" allows anyone to initiate conversation and offers support by going in-depth into their personal problems. This provides a channel for the user to vent freely without any privacy concerns.

How we built it

It is built using Python.

Challenges we ran into

Adding appropriate replies to user messages to offer the best possible support.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I am very happy to know that I could build something that would support and help people who struggle with mental health.

What we learned

I learned to perform sentiment analysis using the VaderSentiment tool.

What's next for Friend: an AI-based, privacy-friendly chatbot for mental health

I would like to enhance it much more with GUI and make it more accurate, supportive, friendly, and also human-like.
