FriendAI Landing Page and Promo Video

Where FriendAI came from

It's hard to make friends when you're an adult.

We're a team of expats who live in Taiwan. When you're new to a country you have no friends and that can feel lonely and isolating. We wanted a tool that would help us form stronger relationships, so we came up with FriendAI.

Friend AI is an AI relationship assistant who helps you:

  • Turn new acquaintances into friends
  • Strengthen existing relationships
  • Maintain important long-term relationships

How it works

When you meet someone new who you want to get to know better you can add them to FriendAI.

You can prioritize which relationships to focus on - high priority means you'll be reaching out more frequently and low priority means you'll check in from time to time just to show you care.

FriendAI picks a few friends to recommend connecting with each day. It's recommendations are based on your interests and your friends' interests and include pre-written messages you can use to quickly reach out.

Of course we spent a lot of time on design and making a simple and usable product.

One cool feature we included will read you the recommendations when you wake up in the morning so you can start your day with positive intentions.

How we built it

We didn't have much time so we tried to be as organized and intentional as possible and we used lots of AI

The backend and landing is built with sveltekit. The landing page was generated using Loveable and almost all of the back-end code was auto-generated using Cursor (we wrote a detailed spec document and then had cursor generated the database migrations, write the api tests and implement the api endpoints).

Because we had a mixture of different skills on the team, the front end was written in react and talks with the sveltekit backend via API.

Even more important than the tech was the design and marketing work. We had a strong designer on our team who helped us come up with a clean and usable design and we used AI tools to generate a promo video to help make our story more clear.

Challenges we ran into

It's a hackathon so time is a huge issue. We definitely had a vision for more features including:

  • the ability to speak to the app (tell it about your plans for the day) and get recommendations for friends who might like to join you
  • friend management and more robust authentication

But of course there's not much time... still we accomplished SO much. If we had 1 more day we probably could have accomplished most of what was on our roadmap.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

It was really nice working as a team. People jumped in to do tasks (like marketing videos and code) that they hadn't had experience with before.

Our product actually uses real apis, is deployed, and is almost usable. For a solid day of coding that's pretty incredible. It's really thanks to new tools like AI that make work much faster.

What we learned

Videos are important. It helps to have a strong product definition but it's still easy to have a bit of scope creep.

What's next for Friend.ai

We're going to get some sleep. This has been a lot of work... that said, we'd like to get the project to the point where we can use it personally. We're almost there!
