🥘 FridgeSwipe: Ending the "Daily Dinner Debate" 💡 Inspiration
In every Indian household, the same question is asked every single day: "What should I cook for dinner?" Despite having a fridge full of ingredients and leftovers, we often struggle to decide, leading to food waste and repetitive meals.
I wanted to take the addictive, fun nature of a dating app and apply it to the most practical room in the house: The Kitchen. FridgeSwipe was born to turn the "Daily Dinner Debate" into an exciting experience.
🚀 What it does
FridgeSwipe is a "Tinder-style" recipe discovery app specifically designed for Indian staples.
Input your Staples: Add the ingredients you already have (Potato, Paneer, Bread, etc.).
Swipe to Match: Swipe through 24 tantalizing Indian recipes in seconds.
Save your Favorites: Bookmark the dishes you love and get instant cooking instructions.
Zero-Waste Cooking: The app prioritizes recipes that use up your existing leftovers, helping households save money and reduce waste.
🛠️ How I built it
I built FridgeSwipe using a modern, high-performance tech stack:
React + Vite: For a lightning-fast user interface.
Tailwind CSS: To create a beautiful, "earthy-modern" aesthetic using cocoa browns, creams, and spice-orange tones.
Framer Motion: To handle the smooth, "swipeable" card animations that give the app its signature feel.
Custom Recipe Engine: A logic layer that matches user ingredients to a curated database of authentic Indian dishes.
🧠 Challenges I ran into
The biggest challenge was creating a swipe-to-match UI that felt natural on both mobile and desktop. Handling the state of a "pantry" (adding/removing ingredients) while simultaneously filtering 24 different recipes in real-time required careful state management. I also spent a lot of time ensuring the UI felt "app-like" and professional, moving from a basic layout to a polished pitch-deck-ready design.
📖 What I learned
Through this project, I learned the importance of Niche UX. By focusing specifically on Indian households and their unique ingredients (like Aloo Paratha or Masala Omelettes), the app feels more personal and useful. I also leveled up my skills in advanced CSS layouts and component-based architecture.
📈 What's next for FridgeSwipe?
I plan to add a "Grocery List" feature that automatically adds missing ingredients to a cart and a "Community Kitchen" where users can upload their own family secret recipes to the swipe deck!
Swipe Right on Dinner. Save your Leftovers. Cook like a Pro. 🥘✨
