Inspiration

I created FridgeMinder AI after watching my family toss hundreds in expired groceries monthly—frustrated by how hard it was to keep track of what was in the fridge and when it would expire. As a busy parent, I knew there had to be a smarter way to use what we already had, cut waste, and simplify meal planning.

What it does

FridgeMinder AI lets users scan their fridge with a phone camera (AI identifies food in 3 seconds), tracks expiration dates with color-coded alerts, generates recipes using only in-stock ingredients (prioritizing expiring items), auto-builds shopping lists, and tracks waste/savings via an analytics dashboard.

How we built it

We started with TensorFlow and OpenCV to train the food recognition model, then built a React Native mobile interface for cross-platform use. Firebase handled real-time data storage, PostgreSQL tracked inventory/analytics, and AWS hosted the AI model for fast inference. We iterated on UX to ensure one-tap actions for adding items/saving recipes.

Challenges we ran into

The biggest hurdle was training the AI to recognize mixed/partially visible food items (e.g., a half-eaten carton of yogurt). We also struggled with accurate expiration date auto-assignment—solving it by categorizing foods and testing shelf-life data against regional grocery standards.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We hit all acceptance criteria: 3-second AI recognition, smooth navigation, and accurate waste/savings calculations. Users report cutting monthly food waste by 30%—seeing real monetary savings made all the hard work worth it.

What we learned

I deepened my expertise in computer vision model optimization (critical for mobile speed) and learned how to translate user pain points (like "I forget what’s in the fridge") into actionable, one-tap features. I also gained insight into regional food shelf-life norms, making the app’s expiration logic hyper-relevant.

What's next for this project

Next, we’ll add barcode scanning for packaged goods, voice commands for hands-free use, and meal planning calendars. We’re also exploring integration with online grocery delivery services to auto-order missing staples—all while keeping the core focus on reducing household food waste.
