Inspiration

The idea for FridgeFresh came from the growing problem of food waste in households. We were inspired by the need to make food management more efficient and to help users reduce waste. Whether it’s forgetting what’s in your fridge or not knowing when food expires, these issues contribute to millions of pounds of waste each year. We wanted to create a solution that empowers people to make better use of their groceries and help the environment in the process.

What it does

FridgeFresh helps users track the items in their fridge and notifies them when food is approaching its expiration date. It also offers recipe suggestions based on the ingredients you have, ensuring that you use food before it spoils. With features like image recognition scanning, and inventory tracking, FridgeFresh makes food management easy and efficient, cutting down on waste and saving money.

How we built it

Node.js, with AI tools and Roboflow API and SQL, and Python and Swift.

Challenges we ran into

We were not able to implement all desired functionalities, like personalized notifications and ensuring accurate expiration date predictions was tricky, as we had to consider various types of food with different shelf lives. We also faced challenges in image recognition, as the API we used was not accurate at times, and developing an algorithm that could recommend meaningful recipes based on a wide range of potential food combinations.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are especially proud of the app's ability to help users save both time and money by reducing food waste. Additionally, creating an intuitive user experience that simplifies food tracking was a major achievement.

What we learned

As none of the members of our team have any experience with app development, we were able to learn a lot more about app development, and Node.js.

What's next for FridgeFresh

In the future, we plan to enhance FridgeFresh by integrating it with smart kitchen appliances, allowing for even more seamless food management. We also aim to expand the recipe database and improve AI-based meal suggestions. We want to improve image Recognition and partner with grocery stores to scan a printed QR code at the bottom of a receipt so you can automatically scan that and have the data enter into our app. We would also like to expand into implementing a Nutrition & Food Expenses Tracker, which analyzes expenses and nutrition behavior based on scans. Additionally, we hope to introduce community-driven features where users can share recipes and tips on reducing food waste.
