We have read in class that food is wasted every year due to laziness or just pure expiry. Personal research into the subject led us to learn the worldwide effects that throwing away food has, especially in America. We made this app concept to help combat this problem and to make our mark on people's lives.
What it does
FridgeFinder is an app concept that allows people to find and make recipes using the ingredients that are already in their fridge/pantry. It is a simple, yet elegant, solution for a substantial problem.
How we built it
We actually had two ideas for an app concept, both relating to food and its sourcing and use. We chose this app idea due to the possible effect it could have on real people's lives. We brainstormed and outlined our plans on a Google Document. Afterwards we began the actual building of the presentation that would outline our concept and the physical concept art. We did create a somewhat unrefined version of the app with proto.io, SQL, and Excel, we used certain screenshots for our concept art. It was a lengthy process, but the finished product speaks for itself.
Challenges we ran into
We ran into some difficulties along the road when trying to think of how to organize our category system and how our database should function in order to instill efficiency within the app as well as user experience. Also there were problems with image movement on the presentation that led to a lot of frustration.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
During this HACKATHON, we went through numerous small accomplishments, including learning Excel and SQL for our advantage, using various sources to research our app, and overall being able to work together as a team and contribute to different parts of the project together.
What we learned
We learned a lot of things throughout this HACKATHON, including how to make a concept for an app, how to properly use various resources to research and design an app, but also about the major problem regarding food management, which is what initially inspired us We also learned the basics and the premise of how SQL and databases work together and Excel.
What's next for FridgeFinder
We will attempt to create an actual application in the future using this google slideshow as a mainframe for our goals and aspirations.
