🧊 The Origin of FridgeApp The idea for FridgeApp actually came together pretty casually. It was one of those regular team meetings where half of us were just trying to stay awake, and the other half were trying to find snacks.
At some point, Temuulen mentioned — between bites of some random snack —
"I wish my fridge could just tell me if I'm eating healthy or not."
We all kind of laughed, but then Kurtis said,
"Honestly, that would be useful. Especially if it could also suggest better groceries without being annoying about it."
That got everyone thinking. What if there was a simple app where you could scan your food, get easy-to-understand nutrition info, and get tips on how to shop more sustainably? No judgment, no crazy diet plans — just helpful suggestions.
Avidikhuu jumped in and added that whatever we made had to actually feel good to use — not just functional, but something people would want to open. Like, food logging should feel satisfying, not like filling out a tax form.
We threw around ideas:
Scanning barcodes with your phone’s camera
Storing food info in a small, simple database per household
Letting each family member have their own profile with their dietary preferences
Suggesting budget-friendly, sustainable options for different incomes
Somewhere during the brainstorm, someone brought up the idea of federated learning. Kurtis was especially into the idea that we could make the app smarter over time without collecting people’s private food data. It fit perfectly — we wanted to build something helpful, but we also didn’t want to be creepy about it.
So, by the end of that meeting, the core idea was locked in:
An app that helps people make smarter, more sustainable food choices — while respecting their privacy — and makes the whole process fun and easy.
It wasn’t some big dramatic moment. It was more like the right pieces just fell into place while we were chatting (and kind of low-key eating whatever snacks we could find).
And that's how FridgeApp started.
