Inspiration

Food production is responsible for nearly a third of all greenhouse gas emissions and requires half of all habitable land on earth.

Evidence shows that eating locally has little effect on the ecological impact of food, as transportation, refrigeration, and packaging accounts for only 5% of food's greenhouse gas emissions.

However, studies show that we can significantly reduce our food's environmental footprint by incorporating more plant-based (meals without meat or dairy) into our diets! Our World in Data - Environmental impacts of food

This inspired me to build Fridge2Table, a web app that helps users make more plant-based meals using what they already have in their kitchen.

What it does

Reduce your eco-footprint by preventing food waste and adding more plant-based meals to your repertoire - the easy way! Simply input the ingredients in your fridge or pantry and choose from 1300+ delicious recipes.

Also:

  • Learn more about the environmental impact of food, and how you can make a difference, on the FAQ page.
  • On the ingredient swap page find inspiration and ideas to help you add more plants to your own recipes.
  • Signup or log in to save your favorite recipes to your cookbook.
  • Click on a recipe card title to go directly to the original recipe

How we built it

Resources

Challenges we ran into

For some reason eslint and the tailwind linter didn't want to play nice and introduced some difficult to find, but minor, bugs - It took me a while to figure out what was going on. Also, I didn't realize that the next api changed with Next13 so I had to do some troubleshooting to use the routes file properly to get the recipes json.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I really like how the styling turned out, especially the homepage. I'm proud that I managed to get the app pretty close to how I originally pictured it in the amount of time I had.

I'm also happy that I could make something that I think could really make a difference. I was personally surprised to learn just how much food production contributed to climate change and I hope this can inform others like myself.

What we learned

I learned a lot about new Next.js 13 features, including the app directory and routes.js files. I also learned a bunch about the environmental impact of food production and transportation.

What's next for Fridge2Table

A new recipes dataset and better recipe formatting. More resources on the ingredient swap page. Impact tracking and data visualization- i'd like to implement some way to keep track of the amount of meatless meals we eat and view our impact on greenhouse gases, land, and water use.
