Inspiration
I love cooking and I love food. I'm confident that most of Eitan's audience shares this passion for creating delicious meals. However, I've noticed that people often feel uninspired and struggle to decide what to cook. They want to prepare something delicious but aren't sure how to use the ingredients they already have. That's why I built Fridge to Table. Fridge To Table is an app that allows users to snap a picture of their fridge (or pantry) and receive personalized recipe recommendations based on their preferences. We've also made it possible for users to upload their own cookbooks, such as Eitan's cookbook, so they can discover what they can make with the ingredients in their fridge and pantry.
What it does
Fridge to Table transforms meal planning by letting users take a picture of their fridge and instantly receive recipe suggestions tailored to their preferences and available ingredients. Users can also upload custom cookbooks to get personalized recommendations that align with their favorite recipes and cooking styles. Our app also gives users grocery list suggestions daily, with recommended meals that can be made with those groceries.
How we built it
I built this project using Swift and Claude Code. I started with the onboarding flow—arguably the most critical part of the user experience—before moving on to the main interface. After designing and building the entire UI, I integrated the core functionality using a Python backend.
Challenges we ran into
The biggest technical challenge was implementing the logic for uploading images to storage, sending them to the backend API, and ensuring consistent responses that fit seamlessly within the UI. Balancing aesthetics with functionality is crucial for user experience, and it's surprisingly difficult to get AI to deliver the exact output format you need every time while maintaining variability in recipe suggestions.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
I'm proud of creating a polished, intuitive app that prioritizes user experience and follows strong design principles. I discovered that even with AI assistance, building truly great software requires meticulous attention to detail. I spent countless hours making subtle refinements that users might not consciously notice, but that subconsciously create a much better experience.
What we learned
Building an exceptional, user-friendly app is challenging even with AI tools. The small details—the ones users don't actively notice—often make the biggest difference in overall experience. Taking a design-first, user experience-focused approach requires patience, iteration, and a commitment to quality at every level.
What's next for Fridge to Table
Fridge to Table has significant potential for scaling through influencer marketing. The next step is to get the app in front of cooking content creators and channels to gauge interest. I envision offering in-app purchases of influencers' cookbooks, creating an interactive way for cooking personalities to share their recipes with their audiences and monetize their content in a new, engaging format.
