Inspiration
Our inspiration comes from all four of us studying abroad - having to manage groceries and cook for the first time. Since most of us lived in student accomodations, the fridges were often shared among multiple users. As students, our busy school schedule meant that it was difficult for us to keep track of our groceries and especially when they expire, resulting in us throwing out half full bottles of milk, expired raw produce, etc. We wanted to create an app that allows us to recall what is in our fridges and remind when they are about to expire to reduce food waste, take up less space in the common fridge and save money along the way.
What it does
Fridge.io has 3 main functions:
- It tracks the expiry date of groceries entered into the system and establishes a reminder system
- Easy tracking of groceries in your fridge
- It utilises an integrated shopping list, to keep track of what you need to buy and upon purchase, the item is seamlessly input into your inventory with a simple click.
How we built it
Currently the 'app' is created using Figma which allows us to visualize how the final product would function.
Challenges we ran into
Curating a list of all the expiry dates of common foods that do not have explicit expiry dates written on the packaging like fresh tomatoes, lettuce, etc. (fresh produce in general)
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud to have conceptualized and rolled out a UX prototype in the short time frame of 3 days.
What we learned
The design process is an iterative one. Thus, every idea can always be improved on regardless of the stage in which the team is in.
What's next for Fridge.io
Writing and integrating the front and back end codes for the app.
