Inspiration

Our motivation for creating the food tracker stems from a desire to minimise food waste. We noticed that often, food items would go bad in the fridge simply because we forgot about their expiry dates. We wanted to create a solution that would help reduce this from happening. By keeping track of what is left in the fridge, we can make more informed choices and reduce unnecessary food disposal.

What it does

This Food tracker app allows users to keep track of the expiry dates of items in the fridge. We implemented a login system so the user can keep track of their fridge.

How we built it

The food tracker was built as a mobile application. We used a database to store the food items and their respective quantity and expiry dates. The app was designed to send push notifications to the user a few days before the expiry date. This required learning about and implementing notification services. We mainly use Flask to implement the app. We primarily utilised Flask for the app’s implementation. Other tools we employed include sqlite3, flask_session, flask_mail, and werkzeug.

Challenges we ran into

The most significant challenge faced by our team was mastering Flask. Most of us had minimal or no prior experience with Flask, which initially posed a slow start.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We successfully implemented a login system and utilized sqlite3 to access the database for our users and their food items. The user can successfully register, login, and edit what is in their fridge.

What we learned

This project gave us a valuable opportunity for us to learn and gain hands-on experience with Flask.

What's next for Fridge

Our future plans for Fridge include the addition of a notification system to alert users when their food items are nearing their expiration dates. We are also considering the integration of machine learning capabilities so that the app can learn from users’ past inputs and predict the expiration dates of food items. We plan to allow food items to be tagged by store to enhance the accuracy of these predictions.
