FreshStart: Building a Global Student Support Network with MeDo

6.9 million international students move to a new country every year. Each one starts from zero. No roadmap. No local friends. No one to answer simple questions like "How do I find a room that won't eat my entire budget?" or "What documents do I actually need before getting my visa?"

We asked over 100 students a simple question: Would you be interested in a single platform for immigrants and students to help you learn about your college, surroundings, paperwork requirements, and connect with people already overseas?

That's 94.2% of students wanting exactly what we set out to build. The market spoke. We listened.

The name "FreshStart" comes from exactly what every international student needs – a fresh start in a new country. "Dai" comes from the Nepali word for elder brother – someone who guides you through unfamiliar territory. That's exactly what our AI assistant is meant to be.

What It Does

FreshStart is the first complete relocation companion for students moving anywhere in the world.

Room Finder – Pre-vetted rooms in 17 cities across 9 countries. No fake listings. No landlords who never reply. Every listing is verified before it goes live.

Budget Planner – Live currency conversion with real-time expense tracking. A student from Nepal sees their $2000 USD budget as रू266,000 NPR. A British student sees £1500 GBP as $1890 USD. Everyone understands exactly what they can afford.

Smart Checklist – 50+ adaptive tasks that change based on your destination. Moving to Boston? Visa deadlines for the US. Moving to London? Different checklist, different requirements. Before visa and after visa – both covered.

Peer Connector – Find and connect with verified students moving to your city. Also connect with students already overseas who can tell you the real truth about college, surroundings, and daily life.

AI Dai – Your senior student guide. Dai remembers your name, your city, your budget, and exactly what tasks you still need to complete. Ask "Am I on track?" and Dai tells you the truth with specific numbers and deadlines.

How We Built It

FreshStart was built entirely on MeDo, one of the most powerful vibecoding platforms available today.

The Tech Stack:

  • Frontend: React with TypeScript and Tailwind CSS
  • Backend: Supabase for database and authentication
  • Plugins: LLM Plugin, ExchangeRate Plugin, WebSocket Plugin
  • Deployment: MeDo's native deployment system

The 3 Plugins That Make FreshStart Work:

1. LLM Plugin: Powers Dai's conversational intelligence. It remembers each student's real data – name, destination city, moving date, budget, and checklist progress – and gives personalized answers, not generic responses. Built with Groq's free tier and automatic fallback to Gemini.

2. ExchangeRate Plugin: Converts budgets between 161 currencies in real time. Uses the Frankfurter API with 24-hour caching to minimize calls. No API key required.

3. WebSocket Plugin: Enables live peer connections. When one student completes a visa application, everyone heading to the same city gets an instant notification. Will be available in this update or next but we are trying to make it available soon as we are working on this for a long time. Built for real-time messaging and collaborative checklist updates.

Due to limited API credits during the hackathon, the LLM plugin operates within free tier limits. We built intelligent fallback responses that use each student's real checklist, budget, and deadline data from localStorage – so Dai always provides specific, personalized answers even when API calls fail. The complete architecture is production ready.

Challenges We Ran Into

Challenge 1: API Rate Limits

The biggest technical challenge was staying within free tier limits. Groq gives 10,000 calls per day, which sounds like a lot until you're testing aggressively. We solved this by building a fallback system that serves checklist, budget, and deadline data directly from localStorage when API calls fail. Now Dai never returns an empty error – only helpful answers.

Challenge 2: Currency Confusion

Students from different countries were confused by USD-only budgets. A student from Nepal had no idea if $2000 was enough for Boston. We integrated the ExchangeRate Plugin to show budgets in local currency with daily breakdowns. Now everyone understands exactly what they can afford.

Challenge 3: Making AI Actually Useful

Most AI chatbots are generic and useless. "I'm here to help!" – help with what? We solved this by giving Dai access to each student's real data. Dai knows your name, your city, your moving date, your budget, and exactly what tasks you still need to complete. Ask "Am I on track?" and Dai tells you the truth with specific numbers and deadlines.

Challenge 4: Building Solo

Building a full-stack application alone is hard. But MeDo's vibecoding approach meant we could focus on product decisions instead of fighting with boilerplate code. What would have taken months with a traditional stack took weeks with MeDo.

Challenge 5: Proving It's Not Just Another App

Students have seen hundreds of "helpful" apps that don't actually help. The survey data (94.2% wanting this) validated the idea. Early user feedback confirmed we're solving real problems.

3 Plugin Integrations – LLM, ExchangeRate, and WebSocket plugins all integrated and communicating seamlessly.

Intelligent Fallback System – When API limits are reached, Dai never fails. It gracefully falls back to localStorage data and still provides personalized answers.

Built on MeDo – Proof that one person with a vibecoding platform can build something that serves millions.

Zero Dollar Development Cost – Built entirely on free tiers. No cloud bills. No API costs. Just smart engineering.

What We Learned

First, vibecoding is the future. MeDo allowed us to go from idea to working product without spending months on boilerplate code. What would have taken months with a traditional stack took weeks with MeDo.

Second, students want AI, not just information. The survey data was clear – 94.2% want this platform, and over 12% specifically demanded AI integration. Generic checklists and static FAQ pages aren't enough anymore.

Third, fallback systems are essential. When building with free API tiers, rate limits are inevitable. A system that gracefully degrades is better than a system that crashes.

Fourth, community is the killer feature. The peer connector wasn't originally the main focus, but early feedback showed that connecting with students already overseas is just as valuable as getting AI advice. Real humans who have been through the journey – that's something no LLM can replace.

Fifth, data beats opinion. We didn't guess what students wanted. We asked them. 94.2% said yes. That data guided every product decision.

What's Next for FreshStart

Real-time WebSocket Messaging – Students will be able to chat instantly with peers in their city and with students already overseas. Group chats by destination city. Direct messages. Live notifications.

Deeper AI Personalization – Dai will learn each student's unique needs over time. Preferences, budget patterns, frequently asked questions – all remembered.

More Cities, More Countries – Currently 17 cities across 9 countries. Expanding to 100+ cities across 30+ countries by end of year.

Mobile App – React Native version of FreshStart for iOS and Android.

Landlord Verification System – Direct verification with landlords before any room listing goes live. No spam. No fake posts.

Scholarship Matching – AI-powered scholarship finder based on student's profile, destination, and field of study.

Global Student Support Network – A community that doesn't exist anywhere else. Students helping students. Across countries. Across continents.

94.2% of students want this. The data is clear. The need is urgent. And we're just getting started.
