Inspiration

We've all seen it—food forgotten, expired, and wasted. It struck a chord when we saw friends and college students, including ourselves, inadvertently waste food by overlooking expiration dates. The last straw was witnessing the disposal of perfectly good food that just went past its 'best by' date. We knew it was time for change.

What it does

Freshify is a smart inventory app that monitors your groceries' shelf life. It keeps an eye on expiration dates and ensures that you use your food items before they go bad. With timely reminders and personalized recipe suggestions, Freshify transforms potential waste into culinary possibilities.

How we built it

We started with Optical Character Recognition (OCR) technology to scan shopping receipts and capture product information. The app's frontend is crafted with React for a responsive experience, while the backend is powered by Django for robust data handling. Freshify includes:

  • A camera feature for scanning receipts.
  • An inventory list of all stored items.
  • A recipe generator for meal inspiration.
  • A manual entry feature for adding items individually.

Challenges we ran into

Deploying the backend to a domain proved to be more challenging than anticipated, with several hurdles along the way.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Implementing Computer Vision OCR for receipt scanning and creating a dynamic recipe generator are our crowning achievements. These features are the heart of Freshify, making it both practical and innovative.

What we learned

The journey taught us the intricacies of app development, especially the effort required in deployment and the importance of a user-friendly design.

What's next for Freshify?

Moving forward, we aim to integrate image recognition to automatically save items into the inventory with just a photo. Additionally, we plan to enhance the recipe generator for even more tailored meal suggestions. Finally, we also want to prioritize implementing reliable push notifications so users can quickly know when their food is about to go.
