Inspiration The inspiration for FreshGuardian came from a common frustration: choosing perfectly ripe fruit. Almost everyone has experienced the disappointment of a fruit that looked good but didn't meet expectations in taste or texture. This sparked the idea to harness technology to help ensure that every fruit selected is at its optimal ripeness.

What it does FreshGuardian uses a machine learning model hosted on Google Cloud's Vertex AI to determine the ripeness of various fruits. This model is integrated into an interactive chatbot, making it easy for users to quickly find out if the fruit in their hand or in the store is ready to eat. This ensures peak flavor and nutrition in every bite.

How we built it We built FreshGuardian by first gathering a diverse dataset of fruit images across different ripeness stages. Using this data, we trained a machine learning model on Vertex AI to recognize ripeness indicators. The model's predictions are accessed via an intuitive chatbot that guides users in selecting their fruit.

Challenges we ran into Our primary challenge was dealing with the variability in fruit appearance under different lighting conditions and from various angles. We also strived to create a chatbot interface that was simple enough for people of all ages and tech skill levels to use effectively, which required several iterations based on user feedback.

Accomplishments that we're proud of We are particularly proud of how effectively our machine learning model predicts fruit ripeness, which has shown high accuracy across multiple fruit types. Additionally, the positive feedback from initial users about the chatbot's ease of use has been very rewarding.

What we learned Throughout this project, we learned a great deal about machine learning applications, especially in how to handle real-world data that is not uniformly perfect. We also gained insights into user-centered design and the importance of making technology accessible to a broad audience.

What's next for FreshGuardian Looking ahead, we plan to expand FreshGuardian's capabilities to include more fruit types and possibly other perishable goods like vegetables. We're also exploring partnerships with grocery stores and farmers markets to integrate our technology directly into shopping environments, enhancing customer satisfaction and reducing food waste.
