Inspiration

According to a 2024 United Nations report, US college campuses waste more than 22 million pounds of food each year, while nearly 44 million people go hungry annually. Within educational institutions itself, our team members noticed that many schools throw away their excess food at the end of each day, while so many students and community members go hungry. We were inspired to create an interface that solves both of these crises. With FreshEats, users of our app can combat food waste and be a part of the solution to the world's current hunger crisis at the same time.

What it does

FreshEats is a mobile application that redirects surplus food from school and universities to individuals in the community at an affordable cost. The app begins with a mission statement to explain to our users the goal of FreshEats. Users then select whether they are a community member or school admin. From there, our design splits into two parts. The community member view is where customers make their profile, view food items offered by each school, make an order, and checkout. The admin view is where schools create the menu of their offerings and track their waste metrics.

In order to incentivize users to use our app, we added a gamification system with a visual waste tracker and impact tool. Each meal users purchase from a school through FreshEats earns them waste points, which add up to an incentive (such as a free meal). This tracker helps users feel good about their impact on decreasing food waste. The impact tool informs customers that their data contributes to research articles that focus on waste management. This tool emphasizes to users that their purchase makes an impact to combat the food waste crisis.

How we built it

We used Figma to create the front-end design of our mobile app. We also utilized the Icons8 Plugin within Figma to implement many of the icons visible on our app. Lastly, we used Figma's prototyping tool to create a wireframe of our website to show navigation among the different parts.

Challenges we ran into

A challenge we ran into was learning how to design on Figma and take advantage of its features, since it is the first time a majority of our group used this tool. Another challenge was coming up with an app interface that was user-friendly. The main challenge we faced was ensuring our prototyping flows were working accurately. Trying to connect the screens to move through the app smoothly took a while to figure out.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of the overall design, look, and feel of our app. We went in with the intention of creating something simple and just learning the basics of Figma, but got so much more out of this experience. Our main achievement is learning how to prototype and navigate through the various screens of the app. Overall, we are proud of the potential global impact our app could have on the community.

What we learned

We learned a lot about how to design on Figma, how to prototype, and how to build a user interface that is friendly and easy to navigate.

What's next for FreshEats

Some additional features we want to add to FreshEats is a mapping feature where users can visualize what schools are closest to them on a map when they plan to order. We want to add an order tracker so users can visualize the progress of their meal getting ready. We would like to add some more features to the admin view such as a finance tracker and a waste tracker. We also want to add information about a centralized pick-up location to quicken the pick-up process.
