About the Project
FreshBasket AI is an AI-powered grocery shopping platform designed to simplify and enhance the grocery shopping experience through intelligent assistance. The project combines modern e-commerce functionality with Google's Gemini AI to help users make informed purchasing decisions, plan meals, and discover recipes based on their preferences and available ingredients.
The inspiration behind FreshBasket AI came from a common everyday challenge. Many people struggle to plan grocery shopping efficiently, maintain a healthy diet, and stay within their budget. Traditional online grocery platforms primarily focus on product listings but provide limited personalized guidance. Our goal was to develop a solution that not only allows users to purchase groceries but also acts as an intelligent shopping assistant capable of providing personalized recommendations and meal planning support.
The application was developed using React, TypeScript, and Vite for the frontend, while Node.js and Express.js were used to manage backend services. Google Gemini API serves as the core AI engine, enabling natural language interactions, recipe generation, personalized grocery recommendations, and meal planning. Firebase was integrated to support authentication and data management, ensuring a secure and seamless user experience.
Throughout the development process, we encountered several technical challenges. Integrating the Gemini API into a real-world application required careful prompt design and effective API management. Maintaining a responsive user interface across multiple devices, organizing different user roles such as customers, vendors, and administrators, and completing the project within the limited duration of the hackathon also presented significant challenges. Addressing these issues strengthened both our technical implementation and problem-solving skills.
Developing FreshBasket AI provided valuable learning opportunities in AI integration, prompt engineering, modern frontend development, Firebase services, API management, and collaborative software development using Git and GitHub. More importantly, the project demonstrated how generative AI can be applied to solve practical everyday problems through an intuitive and user-friendly application.
In future versions, we plan to expand the platform by introducing voice-based AI interactions, nutrition analysis, barcode scanning, grocery price comparison, real-time delivery tracking, multilingual support, and mobile applications. These enhancements aim to transform FreshBasket AI into a comprehensive intelligent grocery shopping assistant that promotes healthier lifestyles, reduces food waste, and improves the overall shopping experience.
