French (Love) Revolution

Inspiration

This short is part of our ongoing series Gay Love Through the Ages, where we imagine and reclaim queer love stories across history. But this time, it became personal.

Inspired by musicals like Les Misérables and The Hunchback of Notre Dame, classic soap opera melodrama, and the writings of Victor Hugo, we set out to tell a forbidden love story at the heart of the French Revolution. The goal was to bring together beauty, rage, tenderness, and fire — in a story that reflects both historical injustice and timeless desire.

What it does

French (❤️Love❤️) Revolution blends cinematic AI imagery, hand-built animation, and original music to tell the story of Adrien and Julien — two young men from opposite worlds who fall in love as Paris burns.

It’s both a sweeping historical romance and a subtle political statement: a reminder that human revolutions have often forgotten the most vulnerable. The film aims to lift the veil over queer lives erased from history and present them with dignity, passion, and pride.

How we built it

This project was created by a two-person team, one doing everything from concept to completion, and the other producing.

We wrote the story and structured it around key historical moments and emotional beats.
Characters and scenes were developed using AI tools like ComfyUI, enhanced with post-processing, color grading, and manual curation.
The soundtrack was composed and generated using AI music tools — a full 8-minute score, plus a 2-minute musical number inspired by Hellfire.
All voiceovers, animation, sound design, and editing were done in-house.
The story was assembled in a nonlinear editing environment, incorporating layered effects, visual transitions, and pacing to create a cinematic feel.

Challenges we ran into

Everything.
From scene cohesion to technical limitations, from AI inconsistencies to sudden changes in tools — working at the edge of what’s currently possible meant constant experimentation.

We struggled with:

Finding a balance between visual realism and stylization.
Managing lighting, continuity, and atmosphere across hundreds of AI-generated frames.
Crafting convincing romantic dialogue while remaining true to the period and tone.
Syncing visuals with a fully original musical number — without traditional animation pipelines.

Above all, time. Pushing this level of detail with limited hands and ever-evolving tools was a sprint to the very end.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We created a full 14-minute cinematic short with an original soundtrack and full arc — our longest and most ambitious project to date.
The musical number, “Fire,” brought together voice, lyrics, AI tools, and cinematic timing in a way we never attempted before.
We told a queer story within a historical setting in a way that felt both grand and intimate, poetic and political.
We’ve built a community that engages, supports, and celebrates these stories with us.

What we learned

Subtlety is hard — and essential. Light, timing, expression — they all matter in delivering emotion through AI.
Queer history must be told with care. It’s not enough to add romance — we must also acknowledge the silence and injustice.
Technical limits can lead to creative breakthroughs. Each bug, glitch, or mismatch pushed us to invent new ways of making the story work.

And most of all: storytelling still rules. The tech is evolving, but heart and structure remain everything.

What's next for French (❤️Love❤️) Revolution

We want to expand this format — high-emotion, high-style shorts with original music — and continue the Gay Love Through the Ages series with even more daring.

The audience’s response to this story has been overwhelming. It proves that there’s hunger for queer narratives that are lush, dramatic, historically grounded — and deeply human.

We’re already planning new episodes, experimenting with new voices, and building stronger pipelines to support even more complex, beautiful stories.
