For people with reduced mobility, even moving around their own home can be unsafe. Navigating tight spaces, avoiding obstacles, and controlling a wheelchair manually can be difficult, leading to frustration and potential risks.
The usual solution? Relying on a caregiver. But constantly needing help takes away a person’s sense of independence and freedom in their own space.
That’s why we created Freewheel—a voice-controlled smart wheelchair designed to make indoor mobility both safe and independent. Using a smartphone app that integrates with Siri and Google Assistant, users can control their wheelchair with simple voice commands. The proximity sensors detect walls and obstacles, which provides secure movement without collisions. Our product only works inside households, since it can have potential dangers otherwise.
With Freewheel, people no longer have to choose between safety and independence—they can have both. Our project falls under Personal Safety, because we believe that true safety means being able to move freely without risks or constant assistance. By combining smart technology with mobility aid, we’re giving people the confidence to navigate their homes safely and on their own terms.
