Inspiration

As a freelance developer, I spent months undercharging—missing out on covering taxes, health insurance, or even vacation time. I realized fellow freelancers faced the same pain: guessing rates instead of calculating sustainable ones. That’s why I built FreelanceRate Calc—to turn guesswork into data-driven pricing.

What it does

It lets freelancers input their desired annual income, time off, and experience level to generate minimum/recommended hourly/daily rates (factoring 30% self-employment tax, insurance, retirement). It also creates project quotes with clear labor/tax/buffer breakdowns—all updating in real time.

How we built it

I started by mapping core business logic (e.g., total working days = 365 - time off - holidays) and experience multipliers. Built the UI with React/Tailwind for responsiveness, used JavaScript for real-time calculations, and deployed on Vercel for accessibility across devices.

Challenges we ran into

Balancing simplicity with accuracy was tough—too many inputs would overwhelm users, too few meant incomplete calculations. Also, validating edge cases (e.g., negative income, excessive time off) required tight error handling to keep the tool intuitive.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

The tool delivers instant, actionable rates without forcing logins or subscriptions. Users can see exactly how taxes/time off impact their pricing—no hidden math. It’s fully responsive, working seamlessly on mobile (critical for on-the-go freelancers).

What we learned

I deepened my understanding of freelance financial realities (e.g., self-employment tax nuances) and user-centric design—prioritizing clarity over complexity. I also learned to build real-time calculation logic that’s both fast and error-resistant.

What's next for this project

Add premium features (PDF quote exports, industry benchmarks, saved rate history) for a monthly subscription. Integrate regional tax variations for EU/US states, and add profit analytics to help freelancers track long-term sustainability.
