Inspiration

Freelancers often face difficulties managing invoices, tracking payments, and reminding clients about overdue payments. These tasks take time and can distract them from their actual work. I was inspired to build an AI Freelancer Payment Agent that simplifies payment management by combining AI with PayPal automation.

What I learned

While building this project, I learned how to use AI to understand natural-language messages, extract important invoice details, and generate professional payment reminders. I also learned how to integrate PayPal's invoicing API, track payment statuses, and design a dashboard that helps freelancers manage their payments efficiently.

How I built it

I built an AI-powered assistant that allows freelancers to describe their completed work through a chat interface. The AI extracts details such as the client's name, amount, currency, and payment deadline. The application then generates an invoice preview for the freelancer to review and approve before sending it through PayPal. It automatically checks payment statuses, updates the dashboard, generates payment confirmations, and creates monthly earnings summaries. It also drafts reminders based on how overdue an invoice is, while keeping the freelancer in control of sending them.

Challenges I faced

One of the main challenges was ensuring that the AI correctly understood messages and asked follow-up questions when important information was missing. Integrating PayPal invoicing and keeping payment statuses up to date were also important challenges. I addressed these by introducing an invoice approval step, automated payment-status checks, and different reminder tones based on how late a payment is. For the demo, I also used PayPal Sandbox to test the payment workflow safely.

What's next

In the future, I would like to improve the agent with support for multiple currencies, more payment platforms, customizable reminder schedules, and detailed financial reports to make freelance payment management even easier.
