Autonomous Haircutting Device - Freeform

Inspiration

The inspiration behind Freeform, our autonomous haircutting device, stemmed from a lifelong struggle with consistently poor haircuts. Recognizing that at its core, haircutting is fundamentally simple if approached with precision and the right technology, we sought to innovate and transform this common frustration into a reliable and consistent solution.

What It Does

Freeform is a handheld device that allows users to achieve precise haircuts easily and autonomously. Users manually move the device to various points on their head. At each position, the device employs vacuum suction to isolate the correct hairs for trimming, automatically adjusts the cutting height according to the selected hairstyle, and precisely trims the hair. By moving the device around the head systematically, users can complete a full haircut designed specifically to their preferences.

Additionally, Freeform integrates with a companion mobile application that allows users to scan their faces and preview or virtually "try on" various hairstyles before committing to the actual cut. This personalized approach enhances user satisfaction and ensures confidence in their chosen style.

How We Built It

The mechanical design and engineering of Freeform were accomplished using SOLIDWORKS, enabling precise modeling and assembly of mechanical components. To optimize the airflow and vacuum system critical for accurately selecting and cutting hair, we utilized Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software for simulation and refinement.

For software development and control systems, we programmed the device using Python for rapid prototyping and user interface development, and C++ for performance-critical tasks and real-time operations within the hardware.

What's Next for Freeform

We are currently developing the third iteration of Freeform technology. This new iteration aims to significantly enhance accuracy and further reduce haircutting time. Achieving these improvements will help us meet our final target specifications, ensuring rapid, precise, and highly customizable haircuts for all users.
