Project: Free World
Inspiration
We watched friends and family drown in endless browser tabs, generic recommendations, and spreadsheet chaos when planning trips. Travel inspiration often comes from films, music, and personal passions, yet no tool connects that cultural identity to a practical, real-world plan. We built Free World to fuse inspiration with execution—making travel planning personal, intelligent, and effortless.
What it does
Free World generates complete, day-by-day travel itineraries in seconds. Enter a destination, budget, and dates. Our AI then provides a detailed plan with attractions, dining, cultural tips, and a budget breakdown. For deeper personalization, create a cultural profile based on movies, music, and interests—and get plans tailored to your tastes. You can explore destinations via integrated Street View, save trips, and export PDF itineraries.
How we built it
- Frontend: React/Next.js with Tailwind CSS for a responsive, Google Maps-inspired UI.
- Backend: FastAPI server handling business logic and AI orchestration.
- AI/ML: Custom pipeline leveraging LLMs (GPT-4/Claude) for itinerary generation, enriched with real-time data APIs.
- Integrations: Google Places Autocomplete, Street View, and Maps Embed API for location data and immersion.
- Storage: PostgreSQL for user data, trip history, and cultural profiles.
Challenges we ran into
- Balancing detail with speed: Ensuring AI-generated itineraries were richly detailed yet delivered near-instantly.
- API orchestration: Managing multiple external data sources (places, cultural info, weather) and merging them coherently.
- Cultural personalization: Moving beyond basic "food & sights" to genuinely map user interests (like a favorite film) to tangible location recommendations.
- UI/UX simplicity: Designing an interface powerful enough for advanced customization but as intuitive as Google Maps.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Creating a seamless end-to-end flow from cultural input to a practical, minute-by-minute travel plan.
- Building a proprietary recommendation engine that meaningfully connects media interests to real-world locations.
- Delivering a polished, exportable PDF itinerary—bridging digital planning and real-world use.
- Achieving a near-zero learning curve with a familiar, map-centric interface.
What we learned
- The importance of "context-aware" AI—not just generating lists, but understanding timing, logistics, and cultural nuance.
- How to effectively chain multiple APIs and data models to create a unified, intelligent output.
- That users deeply value the feeling of personalization more than just infinite options.
- Hackathon-time integration of complex mapping services requires meticulous error handling and fallback strategies.
What's next for Free World
- Integrated Booking: Partnering with services to enable direct hotel and flight bookings within the generated itinerary, personalized to budget and preferences.
- Social & Collaborative Planning: Allowing groups to co-create and vote on trip plans in real-time.
- Real-Time Dynamic Updates: Incorporating live weather, event alerts, and traffic to adjust plans on the fly.
- AR Exploration Mode: Using phone cameras to overlay historical/cultural information onto street views while traveling.
