Inspiration
We created Free Food UBCO after observing the surplus food available on campus and the significant amount of food waste. Despite often being offered leftover catering and excess food, we realized this resource wasn't widely accessible to those in need.
What it does
Free Food UBCO is a mobile app that allows users to sign up and receive notifications about free food in their area. Additionally, users can post their surplus food for others to retrieve.
How we built it
As a team with minimal coding experience (only C++ and Python), we utilized tools like Android Studio, YouTube tutorials, and ChatGPT to develop the app.
Challenges we ran into
We encountered errors in the gradle script plugin, preventing the app from functioning properly.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Despite feeling overwhelmed, we persevered and made progress on the project.
What we learned
Through this project, we gained valuable experience in Java, Android Studio, and coding in general.
What's next for Free Food UBCO
We hope to expand the app beyond UBCO's campus to serve other communities, allowing for the announcement and sharing of free food resources.
