Inspiration
The inspiration for Free Bites came from a desire to leverage technology for social good. We were inspired by the idea of using a map-based web app to connect communities through food, particularly by helping those in need find free food opportunities and reducing food waste.
What it does
Free Bites is a map application that allows users to discover nearby restaurants, share information about free food opportunities, and give back to the community. Users can add and delete pins on the map to mark locations where free food is available, and they can also set timers to alert others before restaurants close, enabling them to grab leftover food.
How we built it
We built Free Bites using the Google Maps JavaScript API for mapping functionality and Firebase to connect restaurants to customers.
Challenges we ran into
One of the main challenges was having marker information to display to the restaurant user and customer user simultaneously through Firebase.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're proud of creating a simple yet impactful application that has the potential to make a real difference in communities. On a technical side, being able to have the markers show for the restaurant user as well as the customer user was very fulfilling.
What we learned
Through building Free Bites, we learned the importance of designing with a social impact in mind. We also learned valuable lessons about user engagement and how to incentivize users to participate in a community-driven platform.
What's next for Free Bites
In the future, we hope to expand Free Bites to more cities and communities, partnering with local organizations and restaurants to further reduce food waste and help those in need. We also plan to enhance the application with additional features, such as real-time notifications and improved routing functionality.
