Inspiration

We wanted to create an all-in-one productivity app that not only helps people organize their daily tasks, but also keeps them motivated with gamification elements. Many to-do apps focus purely on checklists, but often lack incentives to keep users engaged. Inspired by classic RPGs, we decided to make productivity feel like a game—where completing real-life tasks gives you experience, coins, and helps you level up your character. Additionally, we included a budget tracker, mood tracker, and journal to support users’ overall well-being, not just their productivity.

What it does

ToDoLife RPG is a productivity app that transforms your daily routines into an RPG adventure. Users can:

  1. Create and complete tasks and habits, earning experience points and coins.
  2. Spend coins in a virtual shop to customize themes, buy virtual pets, or unlock new abilities.
  3. Track their mood and see trends over time.
  4. Manage budgets and visualize spending habits with clear charts and warnings when overspending.
  5. Keep a personal journal to reflect on their progress.
  6. Use their character’s stats to play mini-games like dungeon diving or battling mobs, making self-improvement more fun and interactive.

How we built it

We built ToDoLife RPG using:

  1. Frontend: React (with Tailwind CSS for styling), focusing on a modular component system for easy expansion.
  2. Data Visualization: Chart.js for budget and mood analytics.
  3. State Management: React Context and hooks for managing game state and syncing user data.
  4. Gamification Logic: Custom game logic module calculating XP, coins, level ups, and handling in-game shop transactions.

Challenges we ran into

  1. Balancing gamification and productivity: It was tricky to make the RPG elements engaging without distracting from the core goal of helping users complete tasks.
  2. Data visualization: Presenting financial data and mood trends in a way that’s both clear and motivating required several design iterations.
  3. Integrating mini-games: Making sure that in-app games were fun but didn’t become a time-waster took careful planning and user feedback.
  4. User customization: Allowing custom themes and virtual items without overcomplicating the UI.
  5. Syncing offline and online data: Ensuring that users could access and update their tasks even without an internet connection.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  1. Seamlessly integrated multiple life-tracking features (tasks, budget, mood, journal) in one cohesive app.
  2. Designed a flexible gamification system where users actually feel rewarded for their real-life progress.
  3. Built a responsive UI that feels fun and modern across devices.
  4. Implemented a robust budget visualization system that helps users develop better spending habits.
  5. Received positive feedback from early testers who said the RPG mechanics genuinely motivated them to stick to their goals.

What we learned

  1. Gamification can be a powerful motivator if implemented thoughtfully—it’s not about just adding points or badges, but giving users meaningful rewards.
  2. Users appreciate personalization; even small customization options (like themes or pets) increase engagement.
  3. Data visualization is essential for self-improvement apps, but it must remain simple and actionable.
  4. Cross-functional features (like task rewards affecting game stats) require careful state management and testing.
  5. Iterative feedback from real users is critical to refine both functionality and UI/UX.

What's next for ToDoLife RPG

  1. Multiplayer Features: Allow friends to join parties and complete quests together.
  2. Daily/Weekly Challenges: Introduce limited-time events to keep users engaged.
  3. More mini-games: Expand the RPG experience with new gameplay elements.
  4. Advanced analytics: Deeper insights into user productivity, mood, and spending trends.
  5. Mobile App: Build native iOS and Android versions for on-the-go productivity.
  6. Integrations: Sync with Google Calendar, Apple Health, and other platforms.
  7. Community Feedback: Open beta for a larger audience to gather more feedback and suggestions.
