Fraud Detection System

Inspiration

Financial fraud is a growing concern in our increasingly digital world. We were inspired to create a tool that could help financial institutions and individuals quickly identify potentially fraudulent transactions, reducing financial losses and enhancing security.

What it does

Our Fraud Detection System is a powerful web application that combines machine learning with interactive data visualization to analyze and flag potentially fraudulent transactions. Key features include:

  • CSV file upload for batch transaction analysis
  • Interactive dashboard with charts showing transaction amount distribution and fraud analysis
  • Detailed transaction table with search functionality
  • In-depth transaction details modal for closer inspection
  • Real-time fraud predictions using a Machine Learning model

How we built it

We developed a full-stack application using:

  • Frontend: React, Material-UI, and Recharts for a responsive and interactive user interface
  • Backend: Flask for a robust API, with Scikit-learn for the Machine Learning model
  • Data Processing: NumPy and Pandas for efficient data manipulation
  • Deployment: Heroku for easy access and scalability

Our machine learning model uses a Random Forest Classifier, trained on a dataset of 1,000,000 transactions, achieving 99.97% accuracy in fraud detection.

Challenges we ran into

  • Balancing model accuracy with processing speed for real-time predictions
  • Handling large datasets efficiently on the frontend
  • Implementing secure file upload and processing
  • Optimizing the machine learning model to reduce false positives

What we learned

  • Advanced feature engineering techniques to improve model performance
  • Efficient data processing methods for large datasets
  • Integrating machine learning models with web applications
  • Collaborative development using Git and GitHub
  • Deploying full-stack applications on cloud platforms

What's next for the Fraud Detection System

  • Implement user authentication and authorization
  • Add support for real-time transaction streaming
  • Develop an API for integration with other financial systems
  • Explore more advanced machine learning techniques, such as anomaly detection and deep learning models
  • Enhance the user interface with more detailed analytics and reporting features
