Inspiration
Wrist fractures are common injuries, and reviewing X-ray images carefully is important for timely clinical assessment. We were inspired to explore how AI could assist clinicians in reviewing wrist X-rays and make the case-review workflow more organized and efficient.
What It Does
FractureLens AI is an AI-assisted wrist X-ray review prototype. It is designed with separate Doctor and Admin portals to support image submission, case management, and review workflows. The goal is to help clinicians examine X-ray images and investigate suspected fractures with appropriate human oversight.
How We Built It
We developed the project around a web-based interface with dedicated Doctor and Admin workspaces. The workflow focuses on X-ray image upload, case organization, and a user-friendly review experience. The project structure is designed to support future integration and evaluation of a suitable pretrained fracture-detection model.
Challenges We Faced
One of our main challenges was designing a clear workflow for different user roles while keeping the interface simple. Another challenge was understanding the requirements for integrating an AI model with medical images and ensuring that predictions are not presented as confirmed diagnoses without proper validation.
What We Learned
We learned more about AI applications in healthcare, user-interface design, project integration, and preparing software for version control and demonstration. We also recognized the importance of model validation, uncertainty handling, patient privacy, and clinician oversight in medical AI systems.
Future Scope
Future improvements include integrating and validating a suitable pretrained fracture-detection model, displaying explainable visualizations, adding image-quality checks, and evaluating performance on appropriate annotated datasets.
Real-World Impact
FractureLens AI explores how AI-assisted tools could support clinicians by organizing wrist X-ray reviews and providing a foundation for further research into fracture detection. It is a research prototype and is not intended to replace professional medical judgment or clinical diagnosis.
