INSPIRATION:
Forest Rights Act (FRA) claims involve documents, land boundaries, and verification information that can be difficult to manage through fragmented manual processes. We wanted to create a single platform that brings this information together and makes claims easier to understand and evaluate.
HOW WE BUILT IT: FRA Atlas is a WebGIS-based platform combining the following:
- Interactive mapping for visualizing and managing claim boundaries
- OCR for extracting information from scanned documents
- Decision support for assisting claim evaluation and prioritization
- GeoJSON and geospatial tools for managing spatial data
We built the frontend with React and backend services with FastAPI and Python and used MapLibre, Turf.js, PostgreSQL/PostGIS, and GeoJSON for geospatial functionality.
CHALLENGES:
Our main challenges were integrating document processing with geospatial data, accurately handling and editing claim boundaries, and creating a smooth workflow between the frontend, backend, OCR, and decision-support components.
WHAT WE LEARNED:
Through this project, we learned how WebGIS, OCR, AI, and backend APIs can be combined to solve a real-world civic technology problem. We also gained practical experience in handling spatial data and designing a modular application where different technologies work together.
IMOACT
FRA Atlas aims to make FRA claim information more organised, visual, and data-driven, helping create a more efficient and transparent approach to forest-rights claim management.
