Inspiration

We were inspired by classic party games like Spoons and the fast-paced excitement of musical chairs. We wanted to create a digital game that captures the frantic energy of physical card games while adding the convenience of online multiplayer. The idea came from watching friends struggle to coordinate in-person game nights - we thought, "What if we could recreate that heart-pounding moment when everyone scrambles for the win?"

What it does

Fourrace is a real-time multiplayer game where 4 players race to collect matching sets. Each player starts with 4 random chits from different categories (fruits, cars, animals, etc.). Players simultaneously pass one chit clockwise while receiving another from their neighbor. The first player to collect 4 matching chits wins, while the remaining players frantically compete for 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place by clicking position buttons. It's simple to learn but creates intense, laugh-out-loud moments.

How we built it

We built Fourrace using React for the frontend with real-time multiplayer functionality powered by WebSockets. The game state is managed through a Node.js backend that handles simultaneous player actions and ensures fair gameplay timing. We used CSS animations to create smooth chit-passing effects and implemented a lobby system for easy friend matchmaking. The UI is responsive and optimized for both desktop and mobile play.

Challenges we ran into

Synchronizing real-time gameplay across multiple players was our biggest challenge - ensuring all players see the same game state simultaneously while handling network latency. We also struggled with creating intuitive visual feedback for the fast-paced passing mechanic and preventing players from gaming the system by clicking buttons too early. Balancing the game speed to be exciting but not overwhelming took numerous iterations.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We successfully created a game that consistently generates genuine excitement and laughter during playtesting. The real-time synchronization works smoothly, and we achieved our goal of recreating that "edge-of-your-seat" feeling from physical party games in a digital format. The clean, intuitive interface makes the game accessible to players of all ages, and the quick 2-3 minute rounds keep people coming back for more.

What we learned

We learned the importance of user testing for timing-sensitive games - what feels perfect to developers might be too fast or slow for actual players. We also discovered that small animation details make a huge difference in game feel, and that simple concepts often require complex technical solutions to implement well. Most importantly, we learned that the best multiplayer games create shared moments of tension and release.

What's next for Fourrace

We plan to add customizable categories so players can create themed games with their own content. We're also working on tournament modes, daily challenges, and power-ups that add strategic depth. Future updates will include voice chat integration, spectator modes, and mobile app versions. We're excited to expand Fourrace into a platform where friends can create their own fast-paced collecting games.
