Inspiration

Our inspiration primarily stems from the unique challenges faced by community college students, who often juggle work, academic goals, and personal development. Recognizing that these struggles are not exclusive to our own experiences, we noticed that the rise of digital technology and the aftermath of COVID-19 have further exacerbated issues related to social connections and overall well-being. As a result, we developed Four Pillars to foster a conducive environment for mental and physical health by emphasizing sleep, exercise, diet, and social connections.

What It Does

Four Pillars focuses on the essential elements of a healthy lifestyle: diet, exercise, sleep, and socialization. By integrating social features and engaging quests, the app ensures user retention and promotes a well-rounded, balanced approach to personal well-being.

How We Built It

We utilized Figma to design the app's appearance and functionality. To bring our concept to life, we will implement a basic architecture and incorporate APIs for real-time location data and personalized diet/exercise plans.

Challenges We Faced

Our ambitious vision presented several challenges due to our limited coding expertise. After attending a Figma workshop, we decided to create a front-end prototype to convey the essence of Four Pillars. This required self-teaching various techniques and animations while maintaining a logical structure and avoiding code duplication. Additionally, our team members had differing opinions on implementation, which ultimately led to productive compromises and a stronger overall concept.

Accomplishments We're Proud Of

We are particularly proud of our teamwork and synergy, especially given that we had just met prior to the project. Our dedication to learning Figma, exploring backend options, and committing to creating the best code possible demonstrates our unwavering passion for the project. Furthermore, our productivity remained steadfast despite numerous distractions.

What We Learned

We realized that staying up all night might not be the most effective approach, as it contradicts the core principles of our app. Nevertheless, we gained valuable insights into the realities of programming jobs with real deadlines and collaborating with new team members. These experiences have taught us about our limits and capabilities in meeting deadlines and producing high-quality work.

What's Next for Four Pillars

Four Pillars has the potential to become a popular platform for promoting healthier habits and fostering new friendships. By making good habits easy to adopt and maintain, users can experience long-term, meaningful change. Our primary challenge lies in ensuring data accuracy, as we rely heavily on user input. To address this, our gamification approach focuses on individual incentives, discouraging users from cheating the system and encouraging personal accountability. As we envision the far-reaching impact of Four Pillars, our team is committed to refining the concept and exploring collaboration opportunities with institutions like UC Berkeley and other resources to bring this vision to life. Our journey continues beyond the Hackathon, as we strive to make Four Pillars a reality and positively impact users' lives.
