Inspiration

The Importance of Greenspace for Mental Health by Jo Barton and Mike Rogerson is a study that we found from the National Institute Institute of Health. This study showcases the correlation between a lack of environmentally green areas, or "green spaces", and an increase of mental stress, depression, and anxiety.

As college students, we know that school can already be a source of stress- we wanted to make a web-app that could help alleviate some anxiety for the UMBC Community and beyond.

What does it do?

This web-application allows users to take photos of an environment that they think is a "green space". A rating of that space is generated that assesses how industrialized the area is. Any user will then have access to the location and rating of the "green space".

How we built it

Utilizing react, flask, python, openAPI, leaflet.js

Challenges we ran into

Ran into issues with api calls, frontend and backend interactions

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Leaflet maps integration

What we learned

Layering, heatmaps, managing stress, teamwork, making responsive applications that work on both mobile and desktop view, how to connect backend and frontend, hosting

What's next for Photograss

Adding a new map and layer for impact areas.

What are we competing for?

Environmental Hack, AI/ML Hack, First Year Hack
