Inspiration

We were inspired by our own struggles with our job search journey. We know how valuable and beneficial someone’s guidance and encouragement can be for someone just starting out in the tech industry.

What it does

Forward connects local mentors and mentees by matching them based on compatibility using user-entered survey information. Forward also offers a Community Hub where users could post their work and join their peers in discussion about their specialties and interests.

How we built it

Lo-fi and Hi-fi mockups were built using Figma. The back-end database of mentors and projects were created using PHP and SQL, and then coded the front-end to display the data in an easy-to-use web interface with HTML and SASS.

Challenges we ran into

It was difficult in the beginning of the project to know what to do first and what to do next. It was overwhelming thinking about all the tasks to complete to bring this project to fruition, but we managed to break it down and tackle all of them eventually!

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We believe our designs really put the users at our top priority. The coded front-end also accurately matches the mockups we developed. The team communicated very well overall, everyone took initiative and took on responsibilities, and we managed to only have 1 or 2 merge conflicts in the entire project.

What we learned

After building this project, we understood how helpful it is to have designs of the application to refer to when building the application. Not only is it helpful for the front-end design, but also in visualizing and designing the database data structure.

What's next for Forward

Some possible features we can create include:

  • A commenting and favouriting feature to the project showcase page
  • In-app messaging
  • Events page for local meetups
