Inspiration
A new generation is graduating from school and college without basic personal finance education because they’re so focused on finishing their studies and advancing their careers. Unfortunately, this often means they learn financial lessons the hard way, through experience, sometimes with serious consequences. That’s why we created Fortune and Fate, a game of life that lets you learn financial decision-making without real-world risks.
What It Does
Fortune and Fate walks you through major life milestones, allowing you to make financial choices and learn from both your mistakes and smart decisions. At the end of the game, it shows you whether you can afford to retire comfortably and provides feedback to help you apply these lessons in real life.
How We Built It
We developed the app using React (JavaScript, CSS). Udita and Aishwarya focused on the UI and main logic of the game, while Alex worked on the gambling simulation, and complicated math formulas for probabilities.
Challenges We Ran Into
During brainstorming, we explored ideas like a gambling simulation and a Game of Life-style approach. However, we initially received feedback that our concept lacked educational value. After some rethinking, we made sure users would actively learn from their decisions at every step through little messages at each step. We also added retirement packages and final advice to reinforce the long-term impact of financial choices.
Accomplishments We're Proud Of
We’re proud of building an app with a clean UI, an extensive game flow, and a highly detailed gambling simulation—all within just 24 hours.
What We Learned
We all had the chance to work with React, which was a new development tool for us. We also learned the importance of meticulous yet realistic planning. Initially, we were ambitious with our ideas but had to scale back down to ensure we could complete everything within our time and resource limits.
What's Next for Fortune and Fate
The next step we’re excited about is integrating an AI advisor. This feature will provide players with real-time financial advice and lessons throughout the game, helping them make better decisions and improve their chances of a secure retirement.
