Inspiration
My friends and I all had the same problem, we just couldn’t seem to get stronger. At first, we thought our workout plans were bad or that we simply weren’t training hard enough. But after doing some research, we discovered something much more important. PROPER FORM. The problem? None of us really knew if our form was actually correct. Instead of constantly second-guessing yourself during every workout and wondering if you’re doing an exercise wrong, FormCheck gives you real-time guidance while you exercise. Train with confidence, improve your form, and focus on making real progress without constantly wondering if you look very stupid.
What it does
FormCheck will guide you through the proper way to do this exercise. It will critique your form, tell you what's wrong, and make it easier to track reps, your improvement, and your overall strength.
How we built it
Using MediaPipe and OpenCV, we track key points on different parts of the body to calculate the angles needed to perform an exercise correctly. The system identifies the user’s resting position and tracks their movement through the ascending and descending phases based on these angles. When a full repetition is completed with the correct form, it is counted as a rep, and the system continues tracking the total number of repetitions performed. Based on the number of completed reps and how closely the user’s movements match the ideal form, the system provides an overall rating and continuous feedback to help the user improve their form.
Challenges we ran into
Uploading the website and connecting the backend to the frontend was one of the more challenging parts of our project. Because GitHub Pages only hosts static files, we had to use a different web service to host our Python backend. We also had a difficult time connecting the backend to the frontend because this was our first time building a fully functional website. The process was very complicated and sometimes confusing, especially since we had only started learning how to code a few months ago.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
The thing we are most proud of is how much we were able to accomplish despite all of us being very new to coding. We managed to learn and build so much in such a short amount of time. Even though our code and project were not perfect, we are still proud of what we created and happy that we were able to build something that turned out this well.
What we learned
We learned a very important lesson about teamwork and time management. Since we were new to coding, one member ended up doing most of the frontend and backend work while my partner and I mostly attended events and explored ideas. Because of this, we eventually had to lock in and work much harder to finish everything on time instead of spreading the work out from the beginning. This taught us that we should always manage our time and contribute equally instead of waiting until the last minute. We also learned how MediaPipe and OpenCV work, as well as how to build and connect a frontend to a functional website.
What's next for FormCheck
If we had more time, we would add more exercises and improve the tracking system to make it more accurate and effective. Another feature we would add is a levelling system to motivate users to keep getting stronger and improving their form. Finally, we would improve the UI to make the website look cleaner and easier to use.
