Inspiration
Anyone who goes to the gym knows that the hardest part of getting started is figuring out where to begin. With so many different exercises out there, it can be overwhelming to choose the right ones — and even harder to know if you're doing them with proper form. That’s why we created Form Fitness: to make working out more accessible and help everyone feel confident in their fitness journey.
What it does
All in one fitness tool that gives you feedback on your home workout form, tracks your workout history to keep you consistent and provides a free, motivating coach to help you achieve your fitness goals from anywhere!
How we built it
We utilized React for our frontend, MongoDB for a user database, Flask for the backend and secure account authentication, and Python with Tensor flow for the computer vision model. One of our core features of our program was tracking form in various workout exercises. In order to achieve this we trained a pose estimation machine learning algorithm.
We built the backend in Python, using Flask for authentication and API calls, Tensorflow's MoveNet pose estimation model to track body landmarks and MongoDB to store users and their individual workouts. For our frontend, we used Vite and ReactJS to build our web app and render a live video feed to record a workout session.
Challenges we ran into
Our team wasn't very experienced in the Flask and React tech stack. There were some difficulties with version handling and communicating between the server and client, but we managed to get things to run smoothly.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
This project felt particularly meaningful because it was problem that everyone in our team had experienced in our gym journeys. Moreover, this was the first time that we made machine learning the primary feature of our project.
What we learned
For most of us on the team this was the first time having a live camera that was used on both frontend and backend so it was definitely a learning curve figuring out the nuances of having both servers constantly sending information. Also, we gained immense experience with the Flask and React tech stack.
What's next for Form Fitness
We'd love to expand the scope of Form Fitness by tracking form on more exercises to track like bench press. We also want to add more parameters and further train our coach to accommodate for different user life styles.
