Inspiration
The inspiration for our mobile app stems from my grandmother's struggles and challenges while living with Alzheimer's. Often, she forgets to take her pills and medication, while also losing weight because of forgetting to eat meals. Adding onto this, we brainstormed how technology can facilitate inclusivity and change in the healthcare systems. Acknowledging the challenges seniors encounter in a rapidly evolving technological world, we aim to develop technology that aids them in adapting to these changes and proves beneficial in their daily lives.
What it does
ForgetMeNot's functions include: setting up calendar events for doctor appointments and daily activities, keeping track of important healthcare contacts, and including information about dosage, time, and function. Overall, it is a mobile app which strives to ease and relieve the difficulties experienced by dementia patients.
How we built it
To build this project, we went through a process of brainstorming ideas to respond to the problem of health inequity. After drawing out prototypes, we created the final design on Figma with the complete prototype flow. Finally, we coded the front-end components for our app on Android Studio but unfortunately; we did not have time to complete the back-end.
Challenges we ran into
Some challenges we ran into included running out of time to complete our app and incorporating our ideas into functional activities. Our planning was not the most efficient as we should have delegated roles and tasks beforehand. This led to bad time management because we ended up spending too long on the design and idea rather than the actual building of the code. Furthermore, we were unfamiliar with the coding language used for this program (kotlin), so trying to understand it was very time-consuming and confusing as we were only beginners, so we may have been stretching for something beyond our expertise.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
The design of our app is aesthetically pleasing and the prototype flow was successful. The idea matches the theme and has a personal connection to our group. Our features and functions worked out with the design and front-end development.
What we learned
We acquired skills in Figma and Android Studio and gained insights into best practices. Additionally, we learned valuable lessons from our hackathon experience, such as the importance of prioritizing coding over design and effective time management.
What's next for ForgetMeNot
As ForgetMeNot was not fully completed, the next steps could involve: creating the code for navigating and switching through pages and fragments, completing the front-end and back-end of the application on Android Studio, and finally, uploading the application to the marketplace to make it available to everyone.
