ForgeAI – AI Multi-Agent Software Engineering Team

Inspiration

Software development involves multiple specialists working together—product managers, architects, database engineers, developers, security engineers, and QA engineers. While modern AI models are powerful individually, they rarely collaborate as an engineering team.

ForgeAI was built to explore how multiple AI specialists can work together in a structured workflow to transform a simple project idea into comprehensive engineering documentation.

What it does

ForgeAI acts as a virtual AI software engineering company.

A user enters a project idea, and specialized AI agents collaborate to produce:

  • Product Requirements Document (PRD)
  • Software Architecture
  • Database Design
  • Application Implementation Plan
  • Security Review
  • Quality Assurance Plan

Each artifact is generated independently while the workspace visualizes the engineering workflow in real time.

How we built it

The project is built with Next.js and TypeScript using a modular multi-agent architecture.

A central orchestrator coordinates specialized engineering agents. The Product Manager agent uses Google's Gemini API to generate structured engineering artifacts, while the remaining agents follow the same orchestration pipeline and can be extended with additional AI models.

The frontend provides a collaborative engineering workspace with live progress tracking, engineering artifacts, timelines, and agent status visualization.

Challenges we ran into

The biggest challenge was designing a reliable multi-agent orchestration pipeline while ensuring every generated artifact followed a consistent schema.

Managing structured AI outputs, validating responses, coordinating agent execution, and keeping the frontend synchronized with backend progress required careful engineering and multiple iterations.

What we learned

Building multi-agent AI systems is very different from building single-prompt applications.

We learned how to coordinate specialized AI agents, validate structured outputs, design extensible orchestration pipelines, and build an interactive engineering workspace capable of scaling to additional AI specialists.

What's next for ForgeAI

Future work includes:

  • AI-powered implementation agents that generate production-ready code
  • Real-time collaborative multi-agent discussions
  • Support for multiple LLM providers
  • GitHub integration
  • CI/CD planning
  • Automated project generation from engineering artifacts
