Inspiration
I was curious about how developers can extend tools like Jira to better fit real-world team workflows. Atlassian Forge seemed like a great place to start, offering a simple yet powerful way to build cloud apps with built-in security and scalability. Creating a “Hello World” app felt like the perfect way to get hands-on and learn the basics.
What it does
This app adds a custom UI panel to Jira Service Management issues and displays a simple “Hello, World!” message. It demonstrates how to embed UI components in Jira and how Forge apps interact with the platform.
How I built it
I used the Atlassian Forge CLI to scaffold and deploy the app. I built the front end using Forge's Custom UI (based on React) and connected it to a simple backend using resolvers. I followed the official documentation and tested the app on a Jira Cloud instance using Forge's development environment.
Challenges I ran into
Understanding the Forge manifest file and permission scopes was a bit confusing at first. I also ran into issues with local testing and deployment, which took some trial and error to resolve. Connecting the front end and back end through the resolver functions required careful attention to Forge's structure.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
I successfully deployed a working Forge app on Jira Cloud and gained confidence using a new development platform. It may be a simple app, but it helped me understand how powerful and flexible Forge can be.
What I learned
I learned how to use Atlassian Forge to build cloud-native apps, how the manifest and permission model works, and how to structure a Forge app with both frontend and backend components. I also got comfortable using the Forge CLI and deploying to a live Jira instance.
What's next
I plan to explore more advanced use cases — such as building apps that interact with Jira workflows, automate repetitive tasks, or integrate with third-party APIs. I’m also interested in exploring Forge’s storage APIs and event-driven functions.
