Inspiration

When we were kids, all the rage was getting free Robux. With our parents unaware, we were completely ignorant of the dangers of accessing suspicious websites online. There was no hesitation before entering all our personal details into unsecure forms and watching the fake bar load as it "generated Robux"! Kids these days are more tech-savvy, but also more chronically online. In order to prevent another generation of blissfully unaware kids ruining their family computer, we created For Your Own Safety. Designed to be a unique and exciting game that can hold the attention span of any kid, For Your Own Safety educates users on the different security protocols such as Firewalls and DNS systems, as well as presenting the consequences of ignoring common-sense warnings!

What it does

Play as a user who bypassed all his computer's warnings to access an unsafe link, and was subsequently transported to a mystical realm beyond the cyberspace, guarded by The Sentinel Protocol. Face off against cybersecurity vulnerabilities and boss fights with security systems like Firewalls in exhilarating top-down combat. Explore the map to discover lost IP packets and logs that contain crucial information teaching players how security systems work in real life, and what they do.

How we built it

The game was made using the Godot game engine. Github provided version control, and pixel art was made by our team on pixilart.com

Challenges we ran into

With 4 people working on one project, we ran into a ton of merge conflicts and version control errors. Resolving these conflicts gave us valuable experience in using version control with a larger team. Additionally, creating a video game in one day requires almost non-stop level and art design, not to mention the coding itself. We had to work very hard to fit the timeframe.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

The boss designs provide a unique and absorbing experience, with polished gameplay and mechanics. Various animations and attacks create an exciting and interactive fight every play through, with just the right amount of difficulty. Our world design also includes a large map to explore, with many secrets. Explore the map to kill enemies and discover lost packets containing lore and educational information.

What we learned

Making games is hard! Creating stylized assets from scratch is already difficult enough, and in a short time-frame, completing a game with a large scope is nigh impossible. Even after cutting down our content, we had to work hard to complete our game. In the end, through teamwork (though it wasn't always smooth), and marge conflicts, we persevered and made a full working demo.

What's next for For Your Own Safety

We originally planned for there to be 5 bosses, with the final boss being a virus originating from the suspicious link you clicked in the beginning of the game. Completing this extra content will be the first priority. Additionally, we're also looking to add some Quality of Life features such as saving and sound effects.
