Inspiration
Care is often shared by family members, relatives, and trusted helpers, but the information needed by the next person is easily lost in chat threads, memory, or hurried conversations. A missed handoff can mean duplicated work, forgotten supplies, uncertainty, and more stress concentrated on one person.
for others was created to make those small but important updates easier to capture, confirm, and share.
What it does
for others is an iOS care handoff app for a private care circle supporting one person. The person receiving care does not need to operate the app.
Members can:
- create a short care note by voice, photo, or text
- let AI prepare a structured draft from voice or photo input
- review and edit every draft before anything is saved or shared
- separate “Seen,” “I’ll handle it,” and “Completed” actions
- track needed supplies separately from general handoff notes
- report content, block another member, and manage shared access
- use for others Premium to create a concise 7-day report from confirmed records
The app is intentionally not a diagnostic, treatment, medication, emergency-response, or medical-advice product.
How we built it
The mobile app is built with React Native, Expo, and TypeScript.
Supabase provides Sign in with Apple-backed authentication, PostgreSQL storage, Row Level Security, Realtime updates, private photo storage, database functions, and Edge Functions.
OpenAI is used only after in-app consent to create drafts for transcription, structured care notes, photo-assisted classification, and the Premium 7-day report. AI output is never treated as final until a person reviews it.
RevenueCat manages the monthly and annual subscriptions, purchase restoration, entitlement synchronization, and access to the Premium report.
The public Privacy Policy and Support pages are hosted on Vercel.
RevenueCat and monetization
The essential care-sharing workflow stays free. Premium adds the 7-day report, which gives a care circle a faster way to review recent changes, unfinished responsibilities, and needed supplies.
We chose this model because coordination should not be blocked by a paywall, while a recurring summary provides clear ongoing value and saves time for families. RevenueCat handles the monthly and annual products, restoration, entitlement state, and server-side synchronization so Premium access can be shared consistently across the care circle.
Privacy and safety
- Every AI-generated result is a draft that must be confirmed by the user.
- Raw voice recordings are not retained as permanent app data.
- Care circles are private and invitation-based.
- The app includes reporting, blocking, shared-content controls, and account deletion.
- Shared text is checked before saving, while normal care terminology and quoted speech are protected from false positives.
- The app does not diagnose conditions, recommend treatment, change medication, or make emergency decisions.
Design and accessibility
The interface uses short Japanese and English copy, large touch targets, a clear visual hierarchy, and a warm but restrained color system. The product is designed for low cognitive load and supports accessibility considerations including Dynamic Type, VoiceOver, and Reduce Motion.
Voice, photo, and text are offered as parallel input methods so people can choose the least burdensome way to record an update.
Challenges we ran into
- grounding AI drafts in what the user actually said or photographed
- keeping unconfirmed or ambiguous supply information from becoming a false fact
- making subscription access work at the care-circle level rather than only for one device
- implementing secure account deletion across Apple, RevenueCat, Supabase Auth, database records, and photos
- supporting reporting and blocking without confusing “hidden from me” with “removed from the whole circle”
- keeping the interface readable at large text sizes
Accomplishments we are proud of
- a working end-to-end iOS app with voice, photo, and text workflows
- monthly and annual RevenueCat subscriptions with restoration and server-side entitlement handling
- a Premium 7-day report built from confirmed records
- private, invitation-based collaboration with reporting and blocking controls
- extensive automated tests for app behavior, database permissions, migrations, deletion, and compatibility
- practical device testing of saved voice notes, photo records, supplies, Premium reports, reporting, blocking, and unblocking
- public release on the App Store before the Shipaton release-window deadline
What we learned
The most important product decision was that AI should assist, not decide. In a care context, a calm review step and clear evidence are more valuable than an impressive but unverified answer.
We also learned that accessibility is not a final polish step: wording length, button size, state visibility, and recovery paths shape the whole architecture.
What’s next
- gather feedback from families and trusted helpers
- improve the clarity of rejected-content messages
- expand optional reminders and notifications without exposing sensitive care details
- continue improving accessibility and bilingual support
