Inspiration
My mom is a hard worker and she's retired now. I feel like she might be susceptible to dementia as she gets older so I want to see if I can help her prolong or be more resilient to it. I've seen friend's and family's that have had to deal with their parents getting old and having various stages of dementia and it's very difficult to go through and see.
What it does
I've built a simple web based, mobile friendly, game where they can just go to the page and play. Since Chinese is my mom's main language, I've added localization for her. She can also increase the font size in case she has has hard time seeing it.
How we built it
I used AI with a prompt: "my mom is getting old and i feel like she doesn't use her brain enough; i've encouraged her to play some brain games but haven't found anything good. i'd like to create some puzzle games for her so she can keep using her cognitive side; i found out from this game called staff x sword that has some really simple puzzle games (similar to like zelda series) that would be good to start with. can we create these simple games and make it intuitive and cute ?
there are several types of puzzles as i've attached to give you more context. if you need more info let me know and let's go from there"
Challenges we ran into
AI was struggling to interpret one of the games and I had to go back and forth on the prompt which cost me tokens and time. I also ran into an issue where the page was cached and I couldn't see the latest changes. I have the puzzle builders and level verifiers so it's very easy to continue to output levels for her.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Built it pretty quick and it came out exactly what I wanted to see. I sent it to my friends and it was very receptive and positive. "it's so cute", "it's fun but pretty easy lol" (<- the whole point since it's for my mom); and I sent it over to my mom and she gave me a 'like' emoji reply lol.
What we learned
Simple does it! There's no time limit and the games are very forgiving; you can reset the move, restart etc. There are words of encouragement via the mascot (it's a bunny)
What's next for For My Mom
Add in a communication for my mom's friends so she can compete with others. Maybe have a way for the child to see how their parents are doing since it's most likely the child asking their parents to play this game so they do the initial set up. Many other ideas but asdf.
